About the Rocking R Ranch

Ranch-Info-PageRocking R Ranch is located in Southwest Colorado at the base of the scenic Lone Cone Peak. Between the main ranch and the additional leased ranches, we have over 8,000 acres of exclusively private hunting property. Plus, we have a permit to guide hunters on the adjacent National Forest which gives us access to miles and miles of prime hunting ground.

The main ranch borders more than 16 square miles of National Forest that is virtually inaccessible to the general public. The leased property also borders miles of National Forest. Therefore, the location of the Rocking R Resort is absolutely spectacular and the deer and elk hunting is second to none. The vegetation within the boundaries of the private property begins with gambrel oak and ponderosa pines in the lower sections along with some cottonwood bottoms and climbs to dense aspen groves and pine forests near the top sections. The numerous aspen draws within the property boundaries offer Colorado elk and deer excellent cover for breeding during the fall and are known to be ringing with bugles during the rut. There is an impressive amount of water on the properties with numerous ponds, streams, and springs creating an environment that allow the wildlife to flourish. The elk create many different wallows during the summer because of the plentiful water and cover that the terrain has to offer.

The Lone Cone attracts elk herds at a level that is rarely seen in other Colorado hunting units. Rocking R Ranch is nestled into a very large and expansive basin that rises all the way to the top of Lone Cone Peak. Therefore, the ranch forms a sanctuary for the deer and elk. Scores of elk call the ranch home in the summer and fall and the herds will stay until they are finally pushed off of the ranch by deep snow in the winter. Mule deer are abundant on the ranch and this area of Southwestern Colorado is known for monster bucks. Rocking R Ranch is also home to large numbers of black bears, turkeys, and blue grouse.

Rocking R Ranch has professionally managed the wildlife within its boundaries for over 20 years. The ranch is outfitted with many different hunting blinds that have been placed in strategic locations.  These blinds can accommodate one or multiple hunters depending on the setup and location.  Therefore, the ranch offers many different options for hunters depending on the season.

The location of the ranch makes it very convenient for activities other than hunting. Miramonte Reservoir is a few miles down the road and is well known for being an incredible fishery. Norwood is located 14 miles from the ranch and has all of the amenities that a typical small Colorado town has to offer. Telluride is 45 minutes away and offers world class skiing, dining, and shopping.

We strongly believe that Rocking R Ranch offers a truly unique hunting experience and the ranch has a history of success that is quite impressive. We hope that you will join us this coming season as we expect it to be very productive as always.
